Some 30 MPs-elect from Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its allies, who suffered a defeat in the country's parliamentary elections last week, didn't take oath on schedule Sunday afternoon.

"We will not take oath before Jan. 6," senior BNP leader and MP-elect Salauddin Quader Chowdhury said at a press briefing here, making no comment on questions why they did not take oath on Sunday, the date fixed earlier.

According to arrangements of the country's parliament secretariat, MPs-elect from BNP and its two allies were scheduled to take oath Sunday afternoon after some 260 MPs-elect of polls winner Awami League and its allies were sworn in on Saturday as members of the country's 300-member ninth parliament.

Salauddin said the BNP's MPs-elect will hold a meeting with its chairperson, two-time Prime Minister Khaleda Zia on Jan. 7 and decide the date for taking oath.

The former ruling party BNP emerged as opposition as the party won 29 seats while its two allies won three seats in the ninth parliamentary elections held on Dec. 29, 2008.

Awami League got 230 seats in the national polls while the Awami League-led 15-party alliance bagged 262 seats. President of Awami League, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to form a new government on Jan. 6.

BNP chairperson Khaleda earlier said the elections were "unacceptable" to her party. However, the party leaders later said they will accept the Awami League-led new government despite the "rigging" polls.
