More than 48,000 Singaporean students who are turning age 15 in the year can register for their identity cards at their own schools, according to an official statement on Monday.
Under the joint initiative issued by the country's Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and the Ministry of Education, students don't have to go to the ICA building to register their National Registration Identity Card (NRIC) starting from January 2009.
The statement said the initiative aims to streamline the process for NRIC registration, the ICA will dispatch mobile teams to registered secondary schools for Singaporean students who are eligible to register identity cards.
"With the registration exercise conducted in schools, the time needed for NRIC registration for each student is reduced markedly -less than five minutes in fact." "Moreover, fewer documents are required and students need only to bring along their School Smart Cards as a form of authentication," the statement said.
Currently, it is mandatory for Singapore citizens and Singapore permanent residents to register for their NRIC once they reach 15 years of age.
