The Philippine government on Wednesday called off a second evacuation plan to pull out Filipinos stranded in Gaza conflicts, hampered by escalated hostilities in the region, a senior foreign affairs official said.
The evacuation, scheduled for 13:30 Manila time Wednesday (0530GMT), was aborted upon the advice of the Red Cross due to the intense fighting in Gaza, said Esteban Conejos Jr., under secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs.
He said the foreign evacuees, including 22 Filipinos, was planned to be escorted out of Gaza City from Erez Crossing.
Conejos said all Filipinos are unharmed while the government would continue to work for the pull-out of its citizens who wish to leave the conflict zone.
There are around 108 Filipinos residing in Gaza, many with their Palestinian families.
