U.S. President George W. Bush Saturday made a phone call to Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and greeted her on assumption of the office of prime minister.
Officials at the PM office said the U.S. President phoned Hasina at 6:40 p.m. (12:40 GMT). Bush termed her success in the election as a "landslide victory".
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said support and cooperation of the United States and other countries of the world in holding a free, fair and neutral election in Bangladesh is praiseworthy.
She expected U.S. cooperation in building a poverty-free Bangladesh as poverty is the "main enemy of the country".
Against the backdrop of recent incidents, Hasina also told the U.S. president that terrorism is one of the main problems in South Asia.
She emphasized taking "effective joint initiatives to face terrorism" in this region.
Hasina-led Awami League won a landslide victory in the country's 9th parliamentary elections held on Dec. 29, 2008, bagging 230 seats out of the 300-seat Parliament. Hasina and her cabinet were sworn in on Jan. 6.
