Philippine soldiers on Sunday clashed with Muslim rebels under a wanted rebel leader in southern province of Maguindanao, a military spokesman announced, adding that the fire fight is going on.
Maj. Randolph Cabangbang, spokesman of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Eastern Mindanao Command, said soldiers fired howitzers toward the rebel position after the encounter at around 8:40 a.m. local time (0040 GMT) in Kitango village.
Cabangbang said the number of casualties on both sides are not immediately clear.
The rebels are believed to be under Umbra Kato, a sub-commander of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), the country's largest Muslim rebel group.
The Philippine government has accused Kato of engineering rampant looting at Christian communities in Muslim-dominating Mindanao and has placed a reward of 10 million pesos (212,766 U.S. dollars) on his head. Source: Xinhua
