Up to 680,000 men and 650,000 women, who turned 20 years old as of Jan. 1, celebrated the Coming-of-Age Day Monday at ceremonies across Japan.
According to the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry, the new adult population at the legal adulthood age of 20 shrank by about 20,000 to 1.33 million, down for the second straight year to reach a record low.
Of Japan's total population, the new adults accounts for some 1.04 percent, down 0.02 percentage point on a year-on-year basis to hit a record low for three years in a row.
Low birth rate is believed to be the key factor behind the decline in the new adult population.
