A strong earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale rocked sea areas east of Loyalty Islands in the Pacific Ocean at 0347 GMT Monday, the Hong Kong Observatory said in a news bulletin here Monday noon.

The epicenter was initially determined by the Hong Kong Observatory to be at 22.7 degrees south latitude and 170.9 degrees east longitude, about 460 kilometers east of Noumea, New Caledonia.
