Police in the north Indian state of Himachal Pradesh arrested a French cultural envoy for alleged drugs trafficking last month but has sent her back to France later, local tabloid Mail Today reported Tuesday.

Isabelle Normand was the director of official French institute Alliance Francaise in north Indian city Chandigarh before she was arrested on Feb. 23 in the north Indian town of Kullu with 250 grams of opium, said the report.

French Embassy sources in New Delhi told the paper that the woman had been sent back to France on the ground that she was carrying non-commercial quantity of the drug.

The Alliance Francaise staff said they were not aware of the whereabouts of Normand but a new director will take charge soon, according to the report.

Alliance Francaise is a French government institute in charge of teaching French language and spreading French culture worldwide.
