Sixteen buses were burned and 15 damaged in the intense anti-government protests which ended in Bangkok Tuesday, according to Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA), Thai News Agency reported.
The metropolitan transportation authorities said at least 50 buses were seized by red-shirts during the confrontations between protesters and security forces, with 16 buses burned by angry protesters and 15 damaged.
BMTA director Pinet Puapattanakul said the total costs suffered by the authority were estimated at 30 million baht (about 846,000 U.S. dollars).
The buses were seized and destroyed when protesters of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) used them to block several streets in Bangkok since last Thursday and to impede the government forces' going ahead during clashes on Monday.
Although several roads remain closed to traffic, Pinet was confident that BMTA buses could resume regular operation from Friday, since normalcy has started returning to Bangkok. Source:Xinhua
