The Kyrgyz central election committee on Tuesday said 18 candidates had presented their documents for the upcoming presidential race by the Monday deadline.
Those who had submitted their documents included President Kurmanbek Bakiyev, the Interfax news agency reported from the Kyrgyz capital of Bishkek.
A committee spokesperson said all candidates must first pass the Kyrgyz language examination, which would be held from May 20 to June 6, in order to be qualified to run in the presidential election.
Kyrgyzstan's election law stipulates that the country's presidential candidates must be able to speak, read and write the Kyrgyz language.
Kyrgyzstan's parliament held a special meeting on March 20 and set July 23 as the date for the presidential election.
