Chairman of moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq inIndia-controlled Kashmir Thursday called on India to take concrete steps aimed at resolving Kashmir dispute within two months' time.
The Mirwaiz warned of mass agitation in case New Delhi fails to make headway in the period of time.
"The new government at New Delhi will be sworn in on Friday. It should have a realistic approach on Kashmir. We will give it sometime to start the dialogue process with the real Kashmiri leaders who represent the Kashmiri sentiment. If they don't make any headway on Kashmir resolution in next two months, we will take to streets and ask people to start a peaceful political agitation on the pattern of 2008 mass uprising," Mirwaiz said.
The separatist leader was addressing a mammoth gathering of over 30,000 people at Martyrs' Graveyard at Eidgah in Srinagar, the summer capital of India-controlled Kashmir.
The people had gathered to commemorate the death anniversary of his father, senior Mirwaiz, who was killed by unidentified gunmen in 1990.
Mirwaiz also urged New Delhi to start tripartite dialogue aimed at resolving the Kashmir dispute.
"New Delhi must initiate dialogue process with Islamabad as well as the Kashmiri leadership. Hurriyat is the real representative of Kashmiri people and if New Delhi takes one step for Kashmir resolution, I assure that we will take 10 steps," he said.
This is for the first time in one year that such a huge gathering was allowed by authorities in summer capital. The people were raising anti-Indian slogans during the rally.
However, several separatist leaders including Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Yasin Mailk were put under house arrest to prevent them from reaching the venue.
Meanwhile, a complete shutdown was observed in the Muslim dominated regions of Indian-controlled Kashmir in response to the strike call given by separatists.
