Japan and Russia on Thursday agreed to cooperate in formulating a "strong" UN Security Council (UNSC) resolution in response to Pyongyang's nuclear test Monday, Kyodo News reported.
During a telephone conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Japanese Foreign Minister Hirofumi Nakasone called for swift adoption of a strong UNSC resolution, which contains additional sanctions against the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), said the report, citing the foreign ministry.
Lavrov, for his part, said that Russia is ready to discuss specific sanctions on Pyongyang when the UNSC deliberates a new resolution on the DPRK.
Russia believes the Security Council needs to issue a strong, unequivocal message on the DPRK's latest nuclear test, he added.
