An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale hit Hokkaido, Japan at 11:37 a.m. (0337 GMT) Friday, according to a bulletin released by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The epicenter was initially determined to be 41.7 degrees north latitude and 143.6 degrees east longitude, about 160 km south- southwest of Kushiro.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damages.
