Indian President Pratibha Patil Friday directed all the state governors to take adequate steps to wipe out ragging from educational institutions across the country.
"It would make eminent sense if parents and guardians are mobilized to counsel their wards to behave more responsibly and be supportive in their dealings with their juniors," Patil said in a letter to all the state governors, asking them to prevent ragging from taking place in schools and colleges.
President Patil has also asked the governors to find out "whether a credible architecture of legal deterrence can be built to prevent ragging".
Her letter came in the wake of a recent death of a student due to ragging by seniors, which has got countrywide condemnation.
