The death toll in Baramulla police firing in India-controlled Kashmir rose to four Wednesday as another youth who was critically injured on Monday died, officials said.
The deceased has been identified as 18-year-old Amir Rashid Mir.
Mir was critically injured during the police firing on civilian protesters in Baramulla, 52 kilometers northwest of Srinagar, on Monday and succumbed to his injuries early Wednesday morning at a Srinagar hospital, where he was admitted for treatment.
People Wednesday morning again took to streets after Mir's body reached the town. Thousands of the people participated in the funeral procession of Mir, raising anti-Indian slogans.
On Tuesday evening, police firing on protesters in the town left a youth dead and several others injured.
The demonstrations broke out Monday following an allegation of sexual harassment of a woman at the hands of a police official, an accusation denied by the police.
Officials had imposed curfew in the district to prevent the demonstrations but failed to keep the protesters at bay.
"Our sons are getting killed for the past three days and there is no one to question the police atrocity. Is this the zero tolerance that Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has been talking about? Among the deceased none was a militant. They were unarmed civilians," said Mohammed Rafiq, an aged person In Baramulla.
The Muslim dominated areas in the region, including Srinagar city, are observing a shutdown for the second consecutive day in response to the three-day shutdown call given by hardline separatist alliance headed by Syed Ali Shah Geelani.
Anti-India demonstrations have been going on in the region since May 30 following rape and murder of two women aged 17 and 22years in Shopian town, 50 kilometers south of Srinagar. Locals suspect the involvement of troopers in the rape and killing of the duo.
