After an assessment of the lessons learned during the Mumbai terror attacks, India has ordered specialized training of its military units deployed at various sensitive places across the country, said a well-placed defense source on Saturday.
The Indian government considers Goa, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Jodhpur,Agra, Chandigarh, Gandhinagar, Surat, Vadodara and Jamnagar as extra-sensitive places and has thus ordered specialized training of its army units in these areas, said the source.
The units will be trained to deal with hostage rescue operations as terrorists are most likely expected to strike at these places, according to the source.
Well trained troops to carry out hostage rescue operations in situations such as the Mumbai crisis is the urgent need of the hour, said the source.
The source revealed that detailed courses have been designed for training of the specialized forces of the Indian army.
The training structure aims to increase their mental and physical stamina and skills to tackle any kind of crisis.
Apart from the already earmarked sensitive places, the defense ministry is also planning to have specialized training for the units deployed in the relatively peaceful locations as well.
According to the source, these troops in relatively peaceful locations would also be very soon trained in urban warfare which is different from what the troops in Jammu and Kashmir and the north-eastern states face and train in.
The personnel that will undergo training in the first phase are deployed in cities having a large population and a high tourist inflow, both domestic and international, according to the source.
