New Zealand Parliament Speaker Lockwood Smith married Alexandra Lang at Parliament on Saturday.

Prime Minister John Key, ministers and other dignitaries were present at the ceremony in the Legislative Council chamber.

The two met when they were students at Massey University in Palmerston North in the 1970s.

Lang has four adult children from a previous marriage. She works as a counsellor at a high school near Smith's farm in Northland.

It is 60-year-old Lockwood Smith's first marriage.
