The Air Safety Commission (ASC) of the European Union (EU) comprising all 27 groups member countries has recommended to revoke air travel ban on four Indonesian airliners, Indonesian Transport Ministry said in Jakarta Sunday.
The group has restricted 51 Indonesian airliner from entering its territory since July 2007 due to lack of safety standard, following a rampant air accidents that killed more than 250 people.
Director for air transport of the ministry Herry Bakti who has just returned from attending EU meeting on aviation in Brussels said that the group would officially decide whether to lift the ban within two weeks.
"The Air Safety Commission has recommended to its internal for lifting air travel ban on four Indonesian airlines," Bakti told a press conference at his office here.
The four airline are leading carrier Garuda Indonesia, Mandala Airlines, Airfast Indonesia and Prime Air, which have potential to open route to Europe, according to the ministry.
The director said that ASC on its meeting from June 30 to July 2 had expressed its satisfaction on the progress on Indonesia's aviation safety.
"The ASC was satisfied with the progress achieved by us," he said.
The director expressed his optimism on that the group would lift its ban, as the ASC, which is in charge on the technical aspect of safety has said that Indonesia has complied with the safety standard.
"The next process of the ASC recommendation is only legality," he said.
Previously the EU has hailed Indonesia's aviation law passed in December, as it previously blamed much on the country's regulation side in lack of safety.
However, the director said that there were some aspects that were still needed to be improved further. The result of the evaluation by the ASC was only a good start for the progress of the Indonesia's aviation, he said.
On the same occasion, Garuda Communications Chief Pujobroto said that should the ban was lifted, his company planned to resume flight to Europe in 2010, starting with Amsterdam.
For the rest of 27 Indonesian carrier, the ministry would talk to the EU in September in Brussel, the director said.
Plane is a favorite transport means in the sprawling archipelago country with over 230 million population, but lack of safety standard had triggered many accidents years ago.
