Indonesia's president candidates and the General Election Commission (KPU) on Monday agreed to solve fixed voter lists (DPT) problems, things that risk triggering chaos following reports that 49 million eligible voters have not yet discovered their names in the lists.

The KPU's chairman Abdul Hafiz Anshary in a conference accompanied by Megawati Sukarnoputri and Jusuf Kalla, the two contenders in the presidential election scheduled in July 8 against the incumbent President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, said that they also agreed to wait for decision by the Constitutional Assembly, the highest body in the election process, concerning points they agreed for.

Anshary said that the KPU and the two president candidates agreed to correct the DPT and possibly to allow voters whose names were not in the DPT to use citizen IDs as the replacement of required ID cards in casting their votes.

Problems in the DPT included double name of one voter, dead people still in the DPT, military and police personnel included in the DPT and voters without clear identity, among others.

"We agreed those points. However, we are facing rules that do not allow us to automatically permit the usage of citizen IDs for casting votes. That's why, we have to wait for the decision of the Constitutional Assembly at 4 o'clock," Anshary said.

He said that the agreement between them was aimed to save the election, no matter who wins the competition.

Megawati Sukarnoputri said that she understood the problems faced by KPU in correcting the flaws, but she stressed the importance to save 'people's sovereignty', by providing them their rights to vote.

She also said that her team and Kalla's were waiting for Yudhoyono's team to work together in correcting the mistakes.

"We tried to contact the other president candidate's team, but they were difficult to contact," she said, referring to Yudhoyono's team.

Kalla said that while they had to wait for the Constitutional Assembly's decision, they were optimistic that the body would give a positive decision.

"Because we know that the Constitutional Assembly represents people's voice too," he said.

In the last few days, calls to delay the election or to fix the DPT have been growing. However, KPU insisted that they would not delay the election.
