Afghan sitting president Hamid Karzai on Monday congratulated German Chancellor Angela Merkel on her victory in Germany's parliamentary election, a press release issued by Karzai's office said.

"President Hamid Karzai congratulates Madam Angela Merkel on wining the parliamentary election held Sunday and hoped that relations between Afghanistan and Germany would further develop under her leadership," the press release added.

Merkel, according to media reports, won more than 33 percent of the votes in the parliamentary election held the other day.
