Marshall Islands President Litokwa Tomeing was removed from office in a vote of no confidence in the parliament on Wednesday.
A total of 17 of the Pacific islands' 33 members of parliament voted in favor of ousting Tomeing in the third vote of no confidence in just 12 months.
It was the first successful no-confidence vote in the 30-year history of constitutional government in the former U.S. territory, Radio New Zealand International reported on Thursday.
The Parliament speaker has named the minister in assistance, Ruben Zackhras, as acting president. Parliament has two weeks from Friday to choose a new president.
Tomeing has served as president for 22 months.
