One dead, two injured in ambush ahead of Philippine president visit

Suspected Muslim rebels on Sunday killed a civilian and wounded two others in an ambush ahead of the visit of Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in the volatile south.

Governor Jesus Sacdalan of North Cotabato said on Monday that the killed in the attack was Noel Valenzuela and the victims' companions, Roberto Calido and Ronald Lacal were injured.

The three were heading to the town proper of Banisilan on boarda motorbike when they were attacked along the way around 12:00 noon by an undetermined number of rouge Moro Islamic Liberation Front rebels.

Sacdalan said an investigation is ongoing to determine the motive behind the killing.

President Arroyo is expected to visit Banisilan Tuesday to look into several government projects.
