A 5.0 magnitude earthquake occurred in Bengkulu province at 5:19 p.m. western Indonesia time (WIB) (1019 GMT), Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) agency reported on Tuesday.

The quake occurred at a depth of 20 kilometers and 118 kilometers northwest of Bengkulu town and 131 kilometers of Lais town in Bengkulu province.

Indonesia is an archipelago country that sits on a vulnerable quake-hit area, where the meeting of two continental plates causes seismic and volcanic movements.
