A high-ranking Pakistan army officer was injured in firing by unidentified gunmen in the capital on Friday, police said.

Police said that gunmen riding a motorcycle opened fire at the brigadier when he was traveling in an army jeep in posh I-8 sector of Islamabad.

Brigadier Suhail and his driver were injured, senior superintendent police Fakhar Alam said.

The gunmen fled after the incident and police launched a search operation in the area. But no one was arrested.

Police said that a pistol was recovered from the attack site.

This was the third attack on senior army officers in Islamabad in a month.

On Oct. 22, Brig Moinuddin Ahmad was killed by suspected militants in Islamabad while he was on the way to office.

In another incident on Oct. 27, Brig Waqar Ahmad Malik, director of defence services guards at the army headquarters, was going to a bank along with his mother in his official car bearing private registration number when a gunman opened fire on him. He escaped unhurt in the attack.

Taliban militants had claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Police have set up about 100 check posts in Islamabad but the suspected militants have carried out three attacks on senior army officers in a month, raising questions about the capability of the police.
