12 militants killed in NW Pakistan tribal area

At least 12 militants were killed and five soldiers including two officers were injured in the ongoing military operation in Pakistan's South Waziristan tribal area during the last 24 hours, an army statement said Saturday.

Security forces are consolidating their positions at Sararogha, the main base of Pakistan Taliban, and surrounding heights, the Inter Services Public Relations said in a daily press release. During clearance of compound in north of Sararogha, four militants hiding in the compound were killed in exchange of fire.

On Shakai-Kaniguram axis, security forces consolidated their positions in all the areas secured so far. Extensive search operations are underway at Ladha and surrounding areas. Huge quantity of arms and ammunition were recovered from different areas.

On Razmak- Makeen axis, security forces are in the process of securing Makeen, another stronghold of militants. Eastern edge of Makeen is being cleared. During engagements a fleeing vehicle with militants on board was destroyed while eight militants were killed.

In Swat and Malakand area of North West Frontier Province, security forces apprehended eight militants during routine search operation.

On relief Activities, 8,338 Cash Cards have been issued to displaced families of Waziristan. Army Field Hospital has treated over 3,000 patients at Dera Ismail Khan so far.

Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani said Saturday that majority of Waziristan people are loyal and peace loving and tribal areas would be reconstructed at the completion of operation.

Addressing the National Assembly, the lower house of the parliament, Gilani said that the government would make all out efforts for relief and rehabilitation of internally displaced persons of South Waziristan.

"The government is reconstructing Malakand and Swat areas and would reconstruct and rehabilitate South Waziristan with the same spirit," the prime minister said.

Pakistani security forces launched the ground assault on Oct. 17 in the South Waziristan, advancing towards the main base of Taliban militants in Pakistan. The army said that about 30,000 soldiers are in place to take on an estimated 10,000 hard-core Taliban militants in the lawless area.

The military said that the operation was launched in six towns of the area in three directions and is likely to continue for six to eight weeks, but no final deadline can be given.
