A militant belonging to Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) outfit was killed in a gunfight in India-controlled Kashmir, police Monday said.
The gunfight broke out Sunday night in Koti village of Doda, around 265 km northeast of Jammu, the winter capital of India-controlled Kashmir.
"On a specific information about the presence of LeT militant in Koti village of Doda, a search party comprising of Indian army and police cordoned off the area. After tracing the militant, the police asked the militant to lay down arms but he hurled few grenades on the search party that exploded without causing any damage. The defiance triggered a gunfight in which the militant was killed," said a police official.
Police also claimed recovery of some arms and ammunition from the possession of slain militant.
Gunfight between militants and Indian army troopers in India-controlled Kashmir takes place intermittently.
Police and defense officials maintain that most of the times the operations triggering gunfights are carried out on prior information about presence of militants in specific areas.
