The European Union (EU) supports Indonesia in leading combat against climate change despite the country's status as the third largest polluters, an official said on Tuesday.
"I welcome and encourage the development of a leadership role for Indonesia, in light of the country's status as the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases," James Moran, the Director for Asia of European Commission's Directorate General External Relation told a seminar titled "Indonesia and the European Union: Expanding Roles in a Globalized World."
He said that intense concern shared by Indonesia and the EU on climate change should be translated into meaningful result at the negotiation at Denmark's Copenhagen in December and beyond.
"The EU recognizes its responsibilities to cut emissions and furnish extensive support for climate change adaptation and mitigation," said Moran.
Climate change is one of the most urgent factors, apart of terrorism, that Indonesia and the EU share concern.
In May, Indonesia held an international event of the World Conference Ocean, in which climate change and the role of ocean in absorbing pollution were discussed.
