A high ranking Indian paramilitary official was killed and three soldiers accompanying him got injured in an explosion in India-controlled Kashmir Monday,a senior police official said.
"Deputy Inspector General of Border Security Force O.P. Tanwar was killed when his vehicle was hit by a blast near a border post in the Samba district. He was leading a patrol party which was visiting the area to search for Pakistani infiltrators following heavy exchange of fire late Sunday night," the official said.
This is the first time an official of the rank of a deputy inspector general has been killed in the disputed region over which India and Pakistan fought two wars.
"A massive manhunt has been launched to track down the militants responsible for causing the explosion," he said.
Another report said two Indian army troopers and a militant were killed Monday in an ongoing gunfight near line-of-control in India-controlled Kashmir, defense officials said.
The gunfight broke out in Keran sector of Kupwara, around 140 kilometers northwest of Srinagar, the summer capital of India-controlled Kashmir.
