The UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator John Holmes arrived here Tuesday on a four-day visit, diplomatic officials said.

Holmes who is on his 4th visit to the island this year is expected to visit the internally displaced camps in the north to see for himself the resettlement of the-conflict displaced civilians.

His last visit was in May at the height of Sri Lankan troops' battle against Tamil Tiger rebels when he accompanied the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon.

Holmes is scheduled to meet Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse on Thursday.

About 280,000 civilians displaced by the final battles between the government troops and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were initially camped in several welfare villages in the northern Vavuniya district after the LTTE was defeated in May.

The government said about half of the civilians have been resettled to their original villages so far.
