George Andre Wells was elected Vanuatu's new parliament speaker, Radio Vanuatu reported on Friday.

The parliament of this south Pacific island nation did not debate the motion on Thursday afternoon as former speaker Maxime Carlot Korman resigned from the post just before parliament session resumed.

When parliament resumed, Finance Minister Sela Molisa nominated George Wells for the speaker's post. The opposition nominated Korman again but was unsuccessful in the vote.
