Militants fighting Afghan government abducted two teachers in the northern Faryab province, police spokesman in the province Mohammad Afzal Imamzada said Thursday.

"Armed militants kidnapped two teachers of a primary school in Daulatabad district on Wednesday," Imamzada told Xinhua.

He put the attack on Taliban militants, saying the insurgents by targeting teachers want to damage education in the province.

However, Taliban militants have denied their involvement in kidnapping the ill-fated teachers.

Out of over 600 schools, shut down due to security problems mostly in the southern provinces where Taliban are active over the past couple of years, more than 200 have been reopened in recent months.
