The Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat has donated 10,000 U.S. dollars to the victims of the earthquakes that struck the Western Province of Solomon Islands in early January, it was announced on Friday.

The money from the secretariat's regional natural disaster relief fund has been paid to the national disaster management office in Honiara, which has been coordinating relief supplies for the earthquake victims, the Secretariat said in a press release on Friday.

A total of seven earthquakes measuring up to 7.2 on the Richter scale shook the islands of Rendova and Tetepari on Jan. 4, damaging houses and food gardens.

About 500 houses were destroyed and an estimated 2,000 people were left homeless.
