Roadside bomb kills 3 Afghan police, wounds 5 in southern Afghanistan

Three police were killed and five others sustained injuries as a roadside bomb organized by Taliban militants struck their vehicle in Taliban birthplace Kandahar south of Afghanistan on Tuesday, police chief in the province Sardar Mohammad Zazai said.

"The incident occurred at 11:30 a.m. local time in Registan district, as a result three policemen were killed and five others sustained injuries," Zazai told Xinhua.

Since launching joint Afghan-NATO operation against Taliban bastion in Marja district of the southern Helmand province early Saturday, the militants have speeded up their activities mostly in the form of roadside bombings in the restive southern region.

The militants in previous attacks organized a roadside bomb in Daman district of Kandahar on Monday, wounding three constables; while on Tuesday they ambushed a police patrol team in Nahr-e- Seraj district of Helmand province, inuring three.
