Indian army and police killed a militant commander of Hizbul Mujahideen ( HM) militant outfit, while suspected militants gunned down a former militant at his residence in India-controlled Kashmir, defense officials and police Monday said.

The gunfight broke out Sunday late evening in Karandidhar forest of district Doda, around 190 km northeast of Jammu, the winter capital of India-controlled Kashmir.

"A militant commander of HM was killed in the gunfight during the exchange of fire. The operation was launched on a tip off about the presence of militants in the area," said Lt. Col. Biplab Nath, Jammu-based defense spokesman.

The slain militant has been identified as local recruit of the HM outfit. HM is the front-line indigenous militant outfit of Kashmir.

Nath also claimed recovery of an assault rifle and some ammunition from the slain militant commander.

Meanwhile, suspected militants killed a man outside his residence in Srinagar, the summer capital of the region.

According to the details provided by police spokesman the killing was carried out in Bemina locality in the outskirts of Srinagar city.

"One Aijaz Ahmad Dada of Hamza Colony Bemina was fired upon by some unknown persons near his residential house. The injured was rushed to hospital but he succumbed there," said police spokesman.

Police sources said Dada was a former militant who surrendered to government.

No militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the killings. Police has registered cases in this regard and have started the investigation.
