General Walter Sharp, the top U.S. military commander in Seoul, said an army unit formed to counter weapons of mass destruction (WMD) that the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) might possess is participating the annual military drills between South Korea and U.S. militaries, local media reported Thursday.
The commander said South Korea and the United States share responsibilities for dealing with the DPRK's WMDs and will closely cooperate on locating, securing and eliminating the weapons, according to Seoul's Yonhap News Agency.
The unit, participating in the joint military exercises called the Key Resolve and Foal Eagle, will take part in a real war even after the planned transfer of wartime operational control from the United Sates back to South Korea scheduled in 2012, Yonhap said.
The drills, aimed at rehearsing the defense of South Korea in case of emergencies, started Monday and will continue throughout the country until the end of the month.
