Afghan and NATO-led troops killed nine insurgents, including three foreign nationals, and detained another in an operation against a Taliban hideout in western Farah province, provincial police chief Mohammad Faqir Askar said Sunday.

"The joint cleanup operation conducted Saturday night in Gilistan district had led to the elimination of nine rebels including three foreigners and a local Taliban commander Mullah Zakir," Askar told Xinhua.

He did not reveal the nationality of the suspected foreign fighters.

The police chief also stressed that a Taliban commander Mullah Abdul Khaliq was arrested during the operation.

There were no casualties on the security forces, Askar said.

Taliban militants fighting Afghan and the NATO-led troops in Afghanistan have yet to make comment.
