Moderate quake hits Andaman islands off Bay of Bengal

A moderate intensity earthquake hit the Andaman islands southeast to the Bay of Bengal in the Indian Ocean early Saturday, reported the Indo-Asian News Service.

The earthquake occurred at 04:39 a.m. local time (23:09 GMT). It measured 6.0 on the Richter scale with its epicenter being located at 13.4 degree north latitude and 93.0 degree east longitude in the Andaman islands, according to the Indian Meteorological Department.

The news service quoted Indian weather officials as saying no casualties have been reported in the quake, the second within one week.

A 7.8 degree earthquake on Richter scale hit areas off the western coast of Andaman and Nicobar islands early last Sunday.

Andaman and Nicobar islands are located in a high-risk zone of earthquake.
