Bangkok hit by bomb, second in a week

A homemade explosive hit Bangkok early Friday morning and injured a man, only days after a blast in the capital city killed one and injured another nine.

The explosion occurred at 1:30 a.m. at Rangnam Road near the King Power duty-free shopping center in downtown Bangkok. A man who was passing by was seriously injured.

Police believe that the explosive was hidden in a plastic black bag in a garbage bin. The injured man was a trash collector, his three-wheeled vehicle was left parking near the bin.

The latest bombing came one day after Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Thursday approved to lift the emergency decree in six provinces, leaving another ten provinces, including Bangkok, still under the emergency rule.

Last Sunday, a M79, modified to be detonated with a clock and with a 15-meter radius of destruction, exploded at a bus station in the central area of Bangkok, killing a 51-year-old man.

Abhisit on April 7 announced a state of emergency in Bangkok and some other area in order to handle the then-ongoing anti- government rally by red-shirts movement. The coverage of the special security decree was later extended to altogether 24 provinces, including Bangkok.
