New Zealand Prime Minister John Key announced on Wednesday that Prince William will visit Christchurch.
The British royal will attend a national memorial service for victims of the earthquake at North Hagley Park on March 18.
At least 166 people died in the quake in New Zealand's second- biggest city on Feb. 22.
Prince William will attend the national memorial service to mark the devastating Christchurch earthquake next Friday, St James 's Palace has announced.
The prince will attend the March 18 service at North Hagley Park on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II, and will also visit Greymouth to speak to the families of the Pike River Coal mine disaster.
Key welcomed the announcement. "This is a heart-warming gesture that will mean a lot to the thousands of people whose lives have been forever changed by these events," Key said.
"I would like to personally thank the Queen for thinking of New Zealand in its darkest hours and very much look forward to seeing Prince William again, even though it is in very sad circumstances, " he added.
Prince William will arrive in New Zealand the day before the Christchurch service before flying to Australia on March 19, where he will visit parts of Queensland hit by the recent cyclone and flooding.
