Japanese food products must obtain radioactivity testing certificates from the Japanese authority before they are allowed to be exported to Malaysia from Friday.
Malaysian Health Minister Liow Tiong Lai told reporters in Kuala Lumpur on Friday that food products without certificates would be regarded as not inspected by the Japanese authority, and would be banned by the Malaysian authorities.
The Malaysian government has been inspecting food and food products from Japan in the wake of radiation leakages at the nuclear power plant struck by earthquake and tsunami in March.
Following the requirement of the certificates, Liow said the Malaysian Custom would conduct random inspection on the imported Japanese food.
Liow assured members of the public that Japanese food products in Malaysia are safe, as the Malaysian authority would continue to ensure that contaminated products would not be imported.
