India's ruling Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi on Sunday condemned the killing of a senior Indian journalist in Mumbai Saturday and expressed her "shock and dismay" over the incident.

"Such dastardly acts will not be tolerated in civilized society. I am confident that the state government (of Maharashtra) led by senior party leader Prithviraj Chavan will act fast and decisively and leave no stone unturned to investigate the murder," Gandhi said in the national capital.

The 56-year-old senior crime reporter working for Mumbai's Mid- Day newspaper, Jyotirmoy Dey, was shot five times Saturday outside his home in broad daylight.

Dey has been covering the underworld for two decades, and has written two books on it as well, named entitled "Zero Dial" and " Khallas".
