A freeway bridge in Minneapolis collapsed Wednesday into Mississippi River and an unknown number of cars were plunged into the river, the Cable News Network (CNN) reported.
Television pictures showed that the central section of the eight-lane bridge caved in, leaving some survivors and cars stranded on parts that are not completely submerged.
The Interstate 35W bridge collapsed at about 6:05 p.m. local time. A tractor-trailer caught fire with heavy black smoke billowing into the sky.
There were reports about injuries but the exact casualties remained unknown.
A rescue operation is underway. Live television pictures show that a rescue boat is trying to evacuate those stranded on the collapsed bridge.
