Peru's President Alan Garcia on Thursday traveled to Pisco, 250 km south of Lima, in Ica department the area, which was worst hit in Wednesday's 7.9 Richter earthquake.
Garcia told media that the government will set up an air bridge-- use airplanes to transfer the worst injured to hospitals in Limato alleviate the burden of hospitals in Chincha, Pisco and Ica, the capital of Ica department. All these cities are suffering serious infrastructure damages.
He said that a Peru Air Force Hercules aircraft had arrived in Pisco with 50 doctors, as well as medicine and humanitarian aid.
Garcia began coordinating the efforts of ministers who had been sent to the region starting from Wednesday night.
The earthquake hit at 6.41 p.m. local time with an epicenter 148 km southwest of Lima, 40 km below the earth surface.
Peru's Geophysics Institute had said the quake registered 7.5 degrees on the Richter Scale, while the U.S. Geological Service said the quake registered 7.9 degrees.
Reports said that 377 people were killed and more than 1,300 injured in the quake. There were more than 320 aftershocks in the 15 hours after the quake. Source: Xinhua
