Cuba put on alert its eastern provinces on Saturday as Hurricane Dean was plowing toward Jamaica and the Gulf of Mexico after threatening to grow into a monster Category 5 storm.

A hurricane alert was issued to the eastern provinces of Guantanamo, Santiago, Granma, Holguin and Las Tunas, Cuba's civil defense department said in a statement.

Dean, the first hurricane to hit the Atlantic coast this year, developed from a tropical storm on Thursday. It has claimed at least three lives in eastern Caribbean islands and Jamaica is expected to take a direct hit on Sunday.

The storm could approach Mexico's Yucatan peninsula and the Gulf of Mexico on Monday.
