Aerial rescue teams are searching for an American aviation adventurer, the first person to succeed in the balloon world trip alone, after he was reported missing from a private flight on Tuesday, officials said.
Steve Fossett, 63-year-old father of four, did not return as scheduled after he left on a sing engine Bellanca in the morning from the south end of the Smith Valley in the western Nevada, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said.
A FAA spokesman, Ian Gregor, told reporters that the Civil Air Patrol had sent teams to look for Fossett over Nevada mountainous areas, but they have yet found any trace of the blue-and-white plane.
The Stanford University graduate and Washington University MBA degree holder became multi-millionaired through his successful adventure in the securities business in Chicago, but he had more ambitions in setting and breaking world records all through the past two decades.
Besides being the first solo world tourist by balloon in 2002, Fossett has set more than 100 world records in five sports, including the one for the longest solo, non-stop, non-refueled flight in terms of distance in 2006.
