A moderate earthquake caused alarm among the inhabitants of Caravel, in the Arequipa province of Peru, with no reports of victims or damages, Peru's Geophysical Institute (IGP) said on Thursday.
The IGP said the earthquake's epicenter was located 48 km northeast of Chala district at a depth of 71 km, and measured 4.6 on the Richter scale.
The IGP has so far counted some 22 quakes in Peru in September, eight of them in Arequipa, located 1,020 km south of Lima.
On August 15, a 7.9-Richter earthquake shook the southeastern province of Ica leaving over 520 people dead.
In June 2001, a 6.9-Richter quake devastated Arequipa and left more than 250 people dead.
