Strengthening Canada's sovereignty and place in the world, and cutting tax will be among the five priorities of the Conservative government during the new session of the parliament, according to a government policy speech made Tuesday.
The government will also work on building a stronger federation, tackling crime by imposing harsher penalties and improving the environment, said a Throne Speech read by Governor General Michael Jean Tuesday.
The 19-page speech will go under a confidence vote in the parliament in the coming days. If it fails to pass, the Conservative government will be toppled, triggering a general election.
