Heavy downpours and hailstorms left at least 35,000 people without power in Brazil's southern Rio Grande do Sul state, local press said on Wednesday.
The storms descended upon the state overnight with six municipalities bearing the brunt, including Julio de Castilhos, Uruguaiana, Soledade, Sao Sepe, Quarai and Santa Maria.
Roofs and windows were damaged by the wind in the western region of the state, close to the border with Argentina. In Julio de Castilhos and Uruguaiana, six houses were destroyed.
The AES Sul company, which supplies power to the state's 118 municipalities, said it was not sure when it would resume service.
According to the company, the transmission lines were damaged mostly by uprooted trees and the affected areas are spread far apart, making the repair work difficult.
The rain and hailstorms are the result of cold front that came from Argentina, the report said. Source: Xinhua
