New Jersey's governor Jon S. Corzine Monday signed into law a bill banning capital punishment, making it the first U.S. state in 40 years to abolish the death penalty.

The bill replacing the death penalty with life in prison without parole was approved by New Jersey's Senate and Assembly last week, according to TV and wire reports.

It has already made a difference in the lives of some prisoners.

Before signing the bill, Corzine signed executive orders Sunday commuting the sentences of 8 inmates on New Jersey's death row to life in prison without parole.
