Police on Monday arrested 50 unemployed Argentines who had occupied a government office for five hours and taken four civil servants hostage in La Plata City in Buenos Aires state.
The arrested, members of a social movement calling itself the Anibal Veron Tendency, on Monday used firearms and violence to occupy the third and fourth floors of the Social Development Ministry building. The clashes left two officers and an unspecified number of demonstrators injured.
The occupiers had sought an increase to the 150 pesos (48 U.S. dollars) they receive in welfare payments, food and a bonus of a month's wages traditionally paid around Christmas.
The demonstrators detonated a homemade bomb during the occupation. Police did not say what damage or injuries it had caused.
Police had also evacuated the area around the ministry and closed nearby streets. Source: Xinhua
